The US Navy protected cruiser USS 'Olympia' at the Battle of Manila Bay in the Philippines during the Spanish American War. The 'Olympia' was the flagship of Commodore George Dewey at the battle, the first major engagement of the war, which saw the destruction of the Spanish Pacific Squadron.
